Flare Gas Recovery and Treatment System
(using a Screw type Compressor and a Divided Wall Column Process)
Low pressure and somewhat dirty gases, like flare gases from Oil&Gas Producing Platform or from refineries, petrochemical and chemical plants, can be recovered by a screw compressor and first treated for the removal of either sour compounds like H2S, CO2 and of water. Using the Divided Wall Column (DWC) technology, it is possible to perform in series both the sweetening and dehydration operations in a single column. The recovered and treated gas can subsequently be measured and sent to the gas sealine (or natural gas pipeline for onshore installations) ready for the natural gas market. Otherwise it can be addressed to a secondary treatement, in order to upgrade the contained components like LPG or petrochemical monomers (e.g. ethylene, propylene, butene-1). The process developed by Sime minimizes the space occupancy and the need for energy for the first gas treatments utilizing a high performance dirty tolerant screwcompressor for the recovery of the wasted gas and its compression. Space occupancy is reduced as much as possible using a Divided Wall Column (DWC) for the operations of sweetening and dehydration, using the most appropriate solvents. The above operations normally require two columns in series with dedicated gas KO drums in front of them. The use of a DWC with internal channel communication between the two chambers allows to improve also the safety of the process, avoiding the installation of the piping for the interconnection of the two columns (chambers). The operating temperature difference between the two operations is small enough, so that no major problems are to be faced for the construction and the operation of the DWC. Sime can take the advantage of its Process & Machinery experience in Compressors choice, design and application, customizing the final solution in order to satisfy the Client's needs and philosophy.
